The most urban areas of all the Hawaiian Islands, also the capitol city, Honolulu is a hip, fun, tropical destination sure to appeal to any LGBT traveler.  On the island of Oahu, Honolulu has been a must visit for LGBT travelers for decades and will continue to be a top destination due to its sunshine filled days and endless beaches.  Waikiki Beach is the most popular of all the beaches in Honolulu. All around you will find buildings and hotels as high as the eye can see as well as views of the vast ecological wonders the island has to offer. You will have stunning views of Diamond Head and the beaches, as well as Ko’olau Mountains and the Punchbowl volcano all from your hotel room perched high in the sky.

The gay scene in Honolulu, while very “out there” is a bit closeted, but you should easily be able to spot the hang out spots and bars you are looking for. Because of its generally laid back attitude and atmosphere Honolulu is a great place to be yourself, the judgment you find in other major metropolitan cities you will not find here.  In addition to the many gay bars and clubs you will find surf clubs, beaches and outdoor sporting events targeted to the LGBT traveler year round. Most of the bars are close enough to the beach to have a drink and take a quick walk to dip your toes in the water. The most known of all the gay beaches in the city is Queen’s Surf Beach, the perfect place to show off that amazing body you have been working on. Queens Surf is located in the Kapiolani Park at Diamond Head. Queen’s Surf Beach offers fun from afternoon through the night, since a lot of the bars are in this area.

Honolulu has so much outdoor activities to offer even the most “citified” gay traveler.  You can hike to the top of a volcano or maybe through a rain forest. You can spend your days in the water, snorkeling, deep sea fishing, surfing, paddle boarding, canoeing or just laying out of the beach with a drink in hand.

Between the Waikiki beaches, the Bishop Museum, the USS Arizona Memorial and rainforest hikes, you can find something for both the adventurous and laid-back gay traveler. The best places for food are Downtown where you can find authentic Hawaiian foods and luaus. But to truly experience Hawaii you have to throw away the pamphlets and head out on a natural hike through the tropical forests and find the local lagoons and waterfalls. Then again, spending a few days at a Hawaiian resort and doing absolutely nothing but enjoying the sights and sounds from your hotel room sounds pretty nice.
